Grape Flowers

4/27/09
Yesterday was the first time ever that I noticed the floral structure of the grape flowers on my vine. I got curious and this is what I found:

Depending on the individual vine, flowers might be female, male, or hermaphroditic (also known as "perfect", which means that each flower contains both male and female structures).

hermaphroditic vines are preferred because they are capable of fertilizing themselves, and every vine planted is capable of bearing fruit.

According to what I could find, most cultivated grapes are native to Mediterranean and Central Asia though THERE ARE some grapes native to North America - Who knew.
